For over 40 years, Georgia colleges and universities have been providing the General Assembly with outstanding interns each session. During this internship, approximately 50 interns will receive firsthand experience of the legislative process.
Interns are assigned to offices in the Georgia House of Representatives or the Georgia State Senate. Each intern will serve a unique purpose in the process and have a multitude of different tasks to perform each day that may include legislative tracking, constituent services, media assistance, attendance at committee meetings, writing bill summaries and so much more. During their time at the State Capitol, interns will gain knowledge of how state government works, how the legislative process works, along with making lifelong career contacts and friendships.
The Georgia Legislative Internship Program (known as GLIP), provides a unique opportunity for a Mercer student to immerse themselves in a full-time role in State Government for an entire semester as in intern while receiving academic credit. It is important to note that while this internship is with the Georgia General Assembly, applications MUST be vetted and approved by Mercer University. - Students must be a junior or senior in a college or university in the State of Georgia at the time of the internship.
- Applicants must NOT have completed graduation prior to the beginning of the legislative session.
- Program is open to ALL majors.
- Student must receive academic credit from Mercer University for this internship.
- This is a FULL-TIME paid internship – each intern will earn a stipend pay of $300.00 per week.
- Work hours are generally 8:00 am-5:00 pm, However office hours can fluctuate on a daily basis.
- Students are advised NOT to take any classes while serving as an intern.
- If necessary, classes online or after work hours are acceptable. Please notify your College Program Coordinator and Dr. Stephanie Kerce if you plan to take classes.
While the specific dates may very each year, students should expect the following general timeline for the GLIP selection process.
- Late August – Mercer Georgia Legislative Internship Program Application Available
- October 1 – Mercer Georgia Legislative Internship Program Application Due via Handshake
- Mid October- Mercer submits official nominees to the GLIP Director for consideration
- Mid/Late October – Initial Candidate Interviews
- Mid December – Intern Placement Interviews
- Early January – Intern Orientation and Position Begins
Please note that while this internship is with the Georgia General Assembly, applications MUST be vetted and approved by Mercer University. Students CANNOT apply directly to the Georgia General Assembly. Students must first apply through Mercer University who will then apply on their behalf if approved.
Mercer University will submit applications for their most promising students for this internship program. Then, these applicants will be subject to a personal interview with House and Senate staff to determine if the applicant will be considered for the program. If selected, applicants will then be interviewed once again to determine placement.
Each year, Mercer will post the Georgia Legislative Internship Program Application through Handshake. Prospective candidates must complete each step of the application process in order to have a COMPLETE application for consideration.

Completed applications will consist of:

- Current Resume
- Two-to-three page essay (Question/details at the top of the application form itself)
- University Transcripts for each university attended
- Three to five completed Reference Forms. (Form is available under the
Resources tab of the General Assembly Intern Program website at https://www.legis.ga.gov/intern-program)
Candidates will be required to submit their GLIP Application Materials through Handshake. Each piece of the application must be completed in order to be considered for nomination.
