Adjunct Faculty Criminal Justice Police Academy

GRCC’s https://www.grcc.edu/schools-departments/criminal-justice is seeking an adjunct instructor in the Police Academy. Candidates must possess an interest in working with diverse student populations from a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin and ability; and a willingness engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies to effectively assess student learning outcomes. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching and service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment, and candidates that are committed to the support necessary to prepare individuals for a career in law enforcement.

Adjunct faculty members are responsible to GRCC and to each other for the successful completion of departmental work as well as work associated with the School of Business and Industry and GRCC as a whole. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provide instruction in the area of Police skills: subject control, tactical skills and tactical operations.
• Apply the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) to meet course objectives.
• Teach and perform demonstrations as well as create and safely facilitate scenario-based training in the classroom.
• Fulfill adjunct faculty responsibilities by providing a stimulating classroom environment, following syllabus requirements, using department approved curriculum and tools, and applying college attendance policies.
• Respond to communications promptly and ensure students have access to course information.
• Comply with https://www.grcc.edu/faculty-staff/general-counsel/policies and the https://www.grcc.edu/faculty-staff/human-resources/employee-groups-resources/employee-groups/faculty.
• Maintain accurate student records to meet GRCC and MCOLES reporting requirements.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education Credentials

• Associates degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Certified instructor in subject control tactics required from an MCOLES supported program

Work Experience

• A minimum of 4,000 hours worked as a Police Officer in the state of Michigan required.
• Experience instructing with subject control, chemical munitions, and police tactics preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Knowledge of common police practices.
• Ability to present and implement complex ideas and concepts from lecture to lab application.
• Skills in active listening, social perceptiveness and critical thinking.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in instructional technology and learning management systems (Google Workspace tools: Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Drive, Canvas)

Physical Demands

• Must be able to provide teaching demonstrations through modeling and scaffolding techniques.
• Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time.

Mental Demands

• An understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.

• An interest in working with diverse student populations, who represent a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin, and ability.
• A willingness and an ability to learn college systems.
• High energy level with enthusiasm and an interest in helping and supporting students and colleagues.
• Use of good judgement in handling sensitive or difficult situations in a professional manner.
